To Cleanse or Not to Cleanse: Unveiling the Real Benefits of Detoxing

Writer: utahfoundationalnutritionutahfoundationalnutrition

Cleansing or not to cleanse?

The beginning of the year often brings renewed focus on health—setting new fitness goals, improving nutrition, and deciding whether or not to cleanse. Many people believe that if they eat a clean diet, a detox isn’t necessary. But is that the case? We will focus on finding the right balance of how and when to cleanse, which is essential for supporting overall health without overwhelming the body.

In my course, Gut Restore, I explore the typical daily habits that impact gut health—many of which go unnoticed. Below is a key slide highlighting signs that your body may need a detox, even if you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Even the healthiest individuals are exposed to toxins daily. Many of the foods we eat have been sprayed with pesticides or contain antibiotics. Additionally, most people have undergone multiple rounds of antibiotics due to surgeries, dental procedures, or infections. If you get sick often, this could be another sign that your gut health needs attention.

Beyond food, we are also exposed to environmental toxins—fluoride in unfiltered water, air pollution, plastics, and chemicals in personal care products. This isn’t meant to be alarming but rather a reminder that our bodies are constantly working to process and eliminate these toxins.

Why Detoxing Matters

Our liver, kidneys, gut, and skin naturally detoxify, but their efficiency can be compromised when overloaded with toxins. Low energy, brain fog, bloating, and sluggish digestion can all show that the body needs extra support. If toxins accumulate, they can also create an environment where parasites and harmful bacteria thrive, further stressing the body.

By reducing toxic exposure and supporting detox organs, you can ✔ lower the risk of chronic disease✔ Improve metabolism and digestion✔ Enhance energy and mental clarity✔ Support immune function and overall vitality.

How to Incorporate Detoxing Into Your Routine

Detoxing doesn’t have to be extreme. It can be as simple as adopting small daily habits or periodically performing a structured reset.

Daily Detox Support (Everyday Habits)

Rather than relying on occasional detoxes, support your body’s natural detoxification processes every day with:✔ Drinking plenty of water with lemon✔ Eating fiber-rich foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grains)✔ Consuming liver-supporting foods (cruciferous veggies, beets, garlic, turmeric)✔ Exercising and sweating regularly✔ Reducing processed foods, alcohol, and chemical exposure.

Mild Detox (Monthly or Seasonally)

A 3- to 7-day reset each month or at the start of each season (4x a year) can help rebalance digestion and energy levels. This could include:✔ Cutting out sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods✔ Eating whole, plant-based meals✔ Drinking herbal teas and green juices✔ Prioritizing rest, hydration, and stress reduction.

Deeper Detox (1-2 Times per Year)

A 10- to 21-day structured detox once or twice a year can help eliminate stored toxins. This might involve:✔ A guided cleanse using whole foods, intermittent fasting, or herbal detox protocols✔ Juice fasting (if appropriate)✔ Liver and gut support with milk thistle, probiotics, and nutrient-dense foods.

Finding the Right Balance

Detoxing should never be used to "undo" unhealthy habits but rather as a tool to support overall well-being. The key is to listen to your body and recognize when it may need extra support.

Signs you may need a detox include:🔹 Low energy or brain fog🔹 Digestive issues (bloating, constipation)🔹 Frequent headaches or skin breakouts🔹 Sugar or junk food cravings🔹 Poor sleep and sluggishness.
