Ingredients
Homemade Fire Cider
Fire cider is a traditional herbal tonic made by infusing fresh, warming ingredients in apple cider vinegar. It’s especially popular during cold and flu season as a simple way to support immune health, digestion, and overall wellness.
Ingredients
Fresh horseradish, chopped
Fresh ginger, chopped
Fresh turmeric, chopped
Garlic cloves, chopped
Onion, chopped
1 orange, sliced
Hot peppers, whole or sliced depending on desired heat
Raw apple cider vinegar, enough to completely cover the ingredients
Raw honey, optional, to taste
Preparation
Directions
Prepare your ingredients. Wash and chop the horseradish, ginger, turmeric, garlic, and onion. Slice the orange and prepare the hot peppers. You can leave the peppers whole for a milder cider or slice them for more heat.
Fill your jar. Place all of the prepared ingredients into a clean glass jar. Don't pack them so tightly that the vinegar can't circulate around them.
Add the apple cider vinegar. Pour raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until everything is completely submerged. Leave about 1 inch of space at the top of the jar. If using a metal lid, place parchment paper between the jar and lid to prevent the vinegar from contacting the metal.
Infuse for 3–4 weeks. Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place. Give the jar a good shake each day. Keep the plant material submerged in the vinegar.
Strain. After 3–4 weeks, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar. Press or squeeze the ingredients to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard or compost the solids.
Add honey, if desired. Stir raw honey into the finished fire cider to balance the acidity and heat. Start with a small amount and adjust to your preferred taste.
Store. Transfer to a clean glass jar or bottle, label it with the date, and refrigerate.
How to Use
Start with 1 tablespoon, either straight or diluted in a little water. The infographic suggests 1–2 tablespoons daily during seasonal challenges.
Tip: Because fire cider is acidic and spicy, dilute it if you experience heartburn or stomach irritation. It can also be used in salad dressings, marinades, or mixed into warm water.
